How to braid a mat.
When you re ready to make the big mat cover a large work surface with kraft paper.
Wrap the thread around one end of the braided rope cutting off the excess braid.
It should have a 33 inch vertical line and a 12 1 4 inch horizontal line.
Before you start practice the braid by making a miniature version of the mat with thinner rope.
You can use the ladder stitch for that.
Draw a cross on the paper.
As you do stitch the sides that are touching together.
Stitch together the sides that are touching.
It may help to choose three different colored fabric strands to keep track of the braid.
Lay down the same length braids side by side pin them together and finally sew them to keep them in place.
Be sure to keep the braid tight.
This is the dimension of the mat when you get to step 4.
Tie off the end of the braid once you ve finished.
Coil it somewhat gently so it doesn t pucker up into a braided t shirt bowl lol but try not to let any gaps show from one ring to the next.
To do the ladder stitch take a stitch from one fabric piece to the other and then reverse it while taking a slight step to the side.
Don t worry if the stitches show as this will be the bottom of the rug.

Braid the strips together until you have the length of rug that you want.
Fold about 1 5 of the braid back over on itself.
Sew together the ends in a t junction with the fabric strip that comprises the center bar of the t inside the other two and the right strip inside the left so that only one fabric strip has exposed ends.
Continue until you have braided all of your fabric strips.
Lay the strips side by side so that the braid is visible.
Braid the fabric by taking the three strands and moving the third strand the strand on the right over the middle strand and under the first the strand on the left.
Separate the three pieces of tied to the coat hanger plarn and begin to braid them crossing the left strip over the middle then the right strip over the middle into a basic flat braid.
Spiral the braid around stitching in place as you go.
Knot the strips and cut off the excess.
As you reach the end of a set of strips tie a new piece of fabric of each variety to the end of its corresponding fabric in your braid.
