If your rug is small enough take it outside to let it dry under direct sunlight. If the mud is very wet you can blot gently with a towel to prevent the moisture from soaking into the carpet pad. Allow for the mud to dry up. To clean your rug blot spills with a clean white towel and scrape up solid debris as soon as you can.

Getting mud out of carpet. Start by pressing a dry clean towel or a clean sponge against your damp rug to help absorb some of the wetness. Mix in some liquid detergent soap with warm water and place it on the muddy area. Wipe area with clean dry cloth.

Leave the salt there for several hours to absorb the moisture from the wet mud when the mud has dried use a vacuum hose to remove the salt and mud. Swish to create a great volume of suds. Have a cup of tea while you wait for the mud to dry out.

After which use a fan or a space heater to dry the rug the rest of the way through. Try to break mud particles into tiny pieces and start vacuuming. Use a spatula to scoop off the larger clumps of mud pour baking soda or salt onto the remaining wet mud. Once it has dried pick up any large pieces with your fingers and use your vacuum cleaner to remove the smaller bits.
