One trick that can be done with the three carriage bolts is to install one in one end and one in the middle leaving the other end dangling down an inch or so amount depending on any existing sag.
How to fasten a floor joist after replacing it.
A new piece of timber is cut a to replace the damaged piece and the joists plates are.
Then jack up the free end and install the last bolt before nailing off everything.
This will create a weak spot.
Clamp the joists tightly before screwing together.
Screws spaced every 6 in.
Joist repair plates fixed to timbers.
Toenail or screw 2x4 blocks to the joists to support the edges of the subfloor and the waste flange.
How to position fix and align joist plates.
Then use pry bars and your reciprocating saw to pry and cut the floor joist away from the subfloor.
Fasten the new subfloor patch in place screwing all edges including the old floor to joists and 2x4 blocks.
Remove as much load above as possible when installing.
After the new joist was in place vertical and adjacent to the old joist i used a clamp to hold them together at the chimney end.
The best way to repair the end of a joist is to remove the damp or affected end after the floor or ceiling has been propped up as one would if removing or forming an opening through a load bearing wall with acrow props.
