How To Install Light Dimmer

The process of installing a dimmer switch for led is the same as that of installing a switch.

Check the manufacturer s specifications on the package to be sure. Connect either one of the remaining dimmer wires to either one of the remaining cable wires and put on a wire nut. If you are installing a 3 way dimmer attach the black dimmer wire to the wire you labeled and attach the red wires as described above for the single pole installation. Connect the ground wire from your dimmer to a green or bare copper wire in the wall box. Use a screwdriver to press the metal grounding clip and bare copper wire 6 inches to the grounded metal box. If you plan to use led cfl xenon halogen hid or fluorescent bulbs make sure the dimmer switch is rated for use with those specific bulbs. Match the size of the wire connector you re using to the size and number of wires being connected.

The wires from the dimmer will typically be black. Connect each dimmer wire to a house wire by gripping the wire ends with a pair of pliers and twisting them together. As the screws tighten the switch will nudge the wires deeper into the box. When you wire the new dimmer connect the wire you labeled it to the common wire on the dimmer and cap with a wire nut.

Screw the dimmer switch onto the electrical box by threading the mounting screws into the threaded openings on the box. Some dimmers like the one we re installing have stranded wires attached. Make sure that the dimmer switch is completely flush with the outer edge of the box then attach the switch cover plate. Make sure that all the wires in the wall are taped and or covered with wire nuts provided with dimmer.

Hold the wires together with the stranded wire protruding about 1 8 in. Clip the loops off the ends of the cable wires strip an inch of insulation off each of the clipped wires. Cut a little section of the drywall beneath the box so as to provide a way for the clip. Twist the ends together clockwise and cap them using a wire connector nut.

Attach dimmer to wall and install cover plate.
