To make your wooden gate look new again remove it and refurbish it with new fasteners paint or stain. Apply polyurethane glue to the wood and place the patch. In this video i show why the gate is sagging and how to fix it. Reattach the screw by driving longer screws through the shim.

Prop the gate open remove the screws from the post side of the hinge and cut a thin piece of cedar shake to fit into the hinge mortise. Spread it so it covers the entire exposed area. If you d like to cosmetically fix the scars left in the old screw locations you can fill the holes with wood putty. Use tools you have around the house to complete the repair and add some flair and creativity.

You want to oppose the twist or sag so if the gate is twisted toward the inside put the screws on the outside. Mount another bracket diagonally at the lower corner of the gate on the latch side.
