Ensure your door cannot close on its own or that you have another way to enter you home. Older locks that have these depressions must be removed in two separate steps. Spray a little 3 n 1 oil or wd 40 into the hole and wait about ten mins. If you have a kwikset entry lock with a lever and the exterior lever comes off and you think the cause is a missing a set screw it almost certainly is not a missing set screw the set screw is in fact still there but screwed in enough into the interior of the post that it looks like it s missing and no longer able to secure the lever. Examine the lever and look for slots or depressions.

Turn the wrench to remove the fastener then pull the lever away from the door by hand. If any screws are exposed during this process remove them to release the lock and remove it from the door. Apply a bit of pressure to the paper clip to trigger a release button inside the hardware.
