How to finish a peg loom rug.

Thread lengths of string just over double the length you want your rug to be through each of the pegs and double it back to tie it loosely to it other end. A peg loom makes it possible to weave square or rectangular rag rugs quickly and with relatively little effort. When you have nearly reached the top of the pegs lift each peg from the hole and slide your work down the warp replacing each peg as you go along the loom. String or thread is threaded through the holes in the loom pegs then pulled taught and the rags are woven in among the strings.

Hold this firmly whilst taking the next peg out cut its warp loop tension and make a reef knot then knot with warp end from previous peg do not put your work down until the ends are tied securely or you could loose all. Weaving on your peg loom to start off make a slip knot and place it over the first peg. Fold the end of the braid against itself by 1 inch 2 54 centimeters. Finish the rug by tucking and sewing the end down.

In this case i made the loom the width required plus a few inches either end but shorter looms can be used if the strips are joined together afterwards. Knot and snip the thread when you are done. If you are using a sewing machine remember to backstitch at the end of your sewing. Weave in and out of all the pegs when you get to the end come around the last peg and weave in and out the way back.

Remove one pegs at a time take great care. Cut warp loop tension and make a reef knot. Replace the peg back in its hole and repeat this with all the other pegs until the weaving is completely off the pegs. Having been taught how to make a rag rug i took the idea home and scaled it up by making a 1 5m 59in sized peg loom for use with sheep s wool.

Carefully pull this peg out of its hole and up through the woven fabric. Take a length of rag and tie it round the peg at the end of the loom either end and weave the material in and out of the pegs when you get to the last peg simply come back weaving the other way. 1 2 inch diameter 5 foot long wooden dowel. Continue sewing the braid to the rest of the rug sandwiching the end inside.
