How to care for honed travertine floors.

Travertine floors are easily damaged and must be cleaned with care. Soap can leave streaks on the tile. We do not recommend vacuuming stone floors as this can lead to chipping the stone. The label should clearly state if the cleanser is formulated specifically for travertine.

Do not use dish soap more than 3 4 times per year to avoid soap scum. Add only about a tablespoon to a gallon of warm water and mop the floor following the above steps. Start your travertine tile cleaning with dry dust mopping. If an acidic cleaner is used a chemical reaction can occur causing discoloration of the tile.

When discussing care and cleaning procedures with your maintenance staff there are recommended do s and don ts that should always be followed. Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface with clean clear water after washing. Do blot up spills immediately. However because you re using soap a residue or film is likely to occur.

Opt for a cleanser with a neutral ph of 7 or below. Regular care and maintenance will keep travertine in its top condition for many years. Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or stone soap. Be sure that your tiles and grout are in optimal condition.

Instead suck up abrasive debris that might scrape your floors such as dirt and gravel with a handheld vacuum. Be careful using a vacuum cleaner. Squeegee your travertine shower after each use. You can deep clean your floors or other surfaces twice a year with an automatic scrubber or a vapor steam cleaner.

Pick a ph neutral mild cleaner ideally a soapless cleaner for best results.

Dust mop your travertine floor tiles regularly. Use a clean dry non treated dust mop. Keeping dirt and dust from the grout and surface of the tile will prolong the life of the stones. Rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water to prevent this.

Once those are out of the way you can wash the travertine floor tiles. Never drag an upright or full sized canister vacuum across your floor to suck up debris.
